EASTOVER, SC (WIS) -

More than 60 SC Army Guard soldiers deployed to Afghanistan with a ceremony Saturday morning at McEntire Joint National Guard Base.

The South Carolina Army National Guard 2-238th Aviation, General Support Aviation Battalion CH-47 unit will be deployed for one year.  Going along with pilots, maintenance and other support personnel were several CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

They first go to Texas for mobilization training before heading overseas.

"This cargo helicopter is a critical workhorse for the commander in the theater of operation," said Maj. Gen. Lester Eisner, Deputy Adjutant General for South Carolina.

"The SC National Guard is providing this key asset in Afghanistan which can operate at higher altitudes and carry higher gross weights than other utility helicopters."
