Four men are in custody after what investigators are characterizing as a failed robbery attempt that left one man dead and two others hospitalized late Friday night.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Maurice Roberts, 17, Demetrice James, 18, Deshawn McClary, 19, and Vincent Nelson, Jr, 21, have been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and burglary.

Lott says just after 11 p.m., the four men forced their way into a home at 4016 Williamsburg Drive and shot three people.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 22-year-old Brandon M. Jones died from gunshot wounds to the upper body. Jones was taken to a hospital, where he died during surgery.

Two other men, ages 20 and 23, were shot in the upper body. One of them was also pistol-whipped, according to investigators. The victims were transported to Palmetto Health Richland where they are expected to survive.

McClary, James, Nelson and Roberts were transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
