Man shot after pointing a gun at deputy overnight

CLAREMONT, NC (WBTV) -

A man is recovering at the hospital after being shot by Sheriffs Deputies during a domestic dispute late Tuesday night.

"It's some of the most dangerous calls our officers get." said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.

"It's late at night. One officer arrives at the scene, he doesn't know what he's getting into when he gets here.  He doesn't know if it's between family members or who it's between...or how many people he'll be facing.  In this case, he was facing a subject with a firearm."

Deputies arrived on scene to a split-level house on Gemstone Street around 10pm, in the usually quiet town of Claremont.

They got a call of a heated fight between a husband and wife.  Other family members had gone to the house to try to diffuse the situation, but had no luck, according to officials.

The as of yet unnamed Deputy got out of his patrol car, and headed toward the house.  At that point, Reid said, the husband came out the front door, and pointed a handgun at the officer.

The Deputy quickly jumped behind a car located in the driveway, drew his weapon, and fired once.

The suspect, later identified as Christopher Cornett, was struck in the abdomen.

Officials say his semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.

Cornett was flown by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center, where at late word he was listed in critical condition.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, he was listed as being in stable condition.

Sheriff Reid said the Deputy's training may have kept the situation from being worse.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, but that's standard protocol in situations like this.

Reid says the officer is not hurt, and seems to be doing fine.

The SBI is investigating the incident.
