Columbia firefighters spent over an hour Tuesday afternoon working to extinguish a large fire at a condominium complex on Percival Road.

Crews were dispatched to the Arbor Wood Condominiums at 308 Percival Road at approximately 1:45 p.m. When they arrived, they reported seeing flames and smoke coming from one of the buildings.

Investigators say six units were affected.

Teresa Broxton came home to the awfully familiar sight.

"I'd been preaching to them about renter's insurance, how important it is because we had a building about four units back that caught fire," said Broxton.

That was back in October. Broxton got the insurance and just in time. Her unit was one of the six that got torched.

Percy Williams was in the building when the fire started, and he helped his neighbors escape

"Worst thing that a person can ever go through is to think that they're about to be burned alive," said Williams. "That's the worst thing that a person can ever go through."

Thankfully the fire only took property and possessions -- things Broxton's insurance will cover. Her neighbors weren't as prepared.

"When you live at a place like this and everyone's sharing the building, it's very important to have it," said Broxton. "The only thing I own right now is what I have on me. But it will be okay."

There have been no reported injuries.

Fire officials estimate the damage to be worth $300,000.
