A reporter for ESPN says that the man who has been publicly identified as the creator of Manti Te'o's girlfriend Lennay Kekua came clean in December and admitted to a friend that he had hoaxed the La'ie native and Punahou graduate.
The report, which was published Friday morning online and aired on today's edition of Outside the Lines on ESPN, says a friend of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo told the show that he called her last month and tearfully admitted to being behind everything.
ESPN says the friend, a woman in her twenties, agreed to be interviewed under the condition she remained anonymous out of fear for her family's safety.
According to the unnamed friend, Tuiasosopo gave a "tearful confession" and revealed that he said it was "at first a game on the unsuspecting Te'o."
He also reportedly said that it wasn't the first time he had duped someone the same way.
Despite reports of a confession, many still speculate as to why Te'o mentioned Kekua on more than one occasion after finding out that she was never real.
