FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) -
A group seeking to bring alcohol back to Folly Beach will have a meeting to update its efforts to modify the alcohol ban that was passed by the Folly Beach City Council.
Voices of Reason will host its monthly meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. on 1 Center Street.
"No matter what side of the issue you fall on, most of us expected to have a healthy discussion and a vote on when and how there would be alcohol allowed on the beach," Voices of Reason Vice-Chairman, John Nicholson said. "City council denied the people that right and avoided discussion on potential solutions outside of an outright ban."
According to a press release, the group's petition "seeks to modify the current ban, give the people of Folly Beach the opportunity to have a debate and ultimately a vote that a majority of residents expected to have."
"This petition has been well received and we have already collected hundreds of signatures," Nicholson said.
Folly Beach city council voted in September 4 to 3 to permanently ban alcohol on the beach. Alcohol has not been allowed on the beach since early July, after council put a temporary ban in place, following a fight on Independence Day where several police officers were hurt during a scuffle with the crowd.
