A 24-year-old man is in custody after deputies say he shot and wounded a teenager who was riding in a pickup truck Tuesday night near Pelion.

Burton Chavis is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center on attempted murder and weapons charges. He is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing Wednesday afternoon.

According to a spokesperson for the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, the incident happened in the 100 block of Canal Drive near Pelion at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators say Chavis and a group of people were walking in the middle of Canal Drive when the driver of a pickup told them to get out of the way.  Witnesses told detectives Chavis pulled a handgun and fired several shots into the back of the truck.

One of the shots struck a 16-year-old passenger in the back.  She was taken to the hospital with injuries that deputies say are not life-threatening.

Two other people riding in the truck were not injured. Deputies say they found several bullet holes in the truck, including one in the back window.

After getting a description from witnesses, deputies arrested Chavis at his home.
