COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Air National Guard promoted its first black general Sunday.
Col. Calvin Elam was promoted to the rank of brigadier general Sunday at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base outside of Columbia. Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston promoted Elam.
Elam was the assistant adjutant general for Air for the South Carolina National Guard.
The Greenwood native is also the chief executive officer for Elam Financial Group.
