Duck hunter released from hospital after shooting

Posted: Updated:

A Sumter man wounded while duck hunting Saturday morning in Clarendon County has been released from the hospital.

The Department of Natural Resources says Mark Pipkin was hunting with friends Saturday at Hickory Top Landing when he was shot just after 7 a.m.  Lt. Robert McCullough said Pipkin was with a group of men from Sumter hunting in the state park.

McCullough said one of the hunters fired a 12-gauge shotgun at a duck and shot the Pipkin, who was standing about 60 yards away. Pipkin took shotgun pellets to his head and chest.

The victim was airlifted to the hospital where he was treated and released

The shooting remains under investigation.  McCullough says it does not appear that the shooting was intentional. Investigators have not yet determined if charges will be filed against the hunter who shot Pipkin.
