New study shows omega-3 fatty acids may influence immune response, Dr. DeSilva explains.
Edison, New Jersey (PRWEB) January 11, 2013
In a blog post published last week on ArteryHealth.org, the site's Medical Advisor Dr. Derrick DeSilva, M.D. stressed the importance of omega-3 fatty acids and reported on the results of some new research that indicates omega-3 fatty acid supplements may alleviate inflammation caused by type 2 diabetes mellitus.
“In my opinion omega-3s are one of THE most important supplements that we should all be taking,” said DeSilva. “Inflammation is the number one killer in this country.”
Dr. DeSilva, M.D. is a practicing Internist and Senior Attending Staff at Raritan Bay Medical Center and is on the teaching faculty at JFK Medical Center in New Jersey.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 84 patients, 45-85 years, with at least a 2-year history of type 2 diabetes mellitus found that short-term omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can reduce inflammation in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects were given either 3 omega-3 capsules p/d (eicosapentaenoic acid 1,548 mg; docosahexaenoic acid 828 mg; other omega-3 fatty acids 338 mg), or 3 placebo capsules p/d (sunflower oil 2,100 mg) for 8 weeks. Blood samples were taken at baseline and post-treatment and serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-2 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) were assessed. Results showed decreased IL-2 and TNF-a levels and no changes to CRP in the omega group, as compared to placebo.
