SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Sumter County is a county without an adult store. And at the moment, there's no chance of one being approved.

As of Tuesday, Sumter County Council made a moratorium for them.

The action was Charles Edens' idea.

"This is not an opportunity to try and outlaw them completely from the county," said Edens.

He says it's proactive. They haven't had any problems, but the City of Sumter, he says, has been going back and forth with a potential adult business owner.

And in Columbia, for more than a year, Taboo has been at the source of contention for Columbia City Council, who has been trying to re-zone adult businesses.

Richland County has also been dealing with it after the owner of Heartbreakers considered setting up shop near Williams-Brice Stadium.

"Nobody likes to get caught up in that so I thought, 'Stop,'" said Edens. "We don't have any applications for it right now so we're not holding anybody up, so I thought, 'Let's stop and review our ordinance.'"

What that means, they had time to pause and make sure any potential adult businesses would have to be in an industrial areas -- tucked away.

"That's part of regulations," said Edens. "As part of zoning and business license regulations is you would have your setbacks from churches and schools, parks things like that."

He insists the moratorium will be lifted in a few weeks and that they're not trying to keep anybody from coming down the road, just trying to keep them off the beaten path.
