CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A 35-year-old man is behind bars after authorities say he resisted arrest, and spit blood and saliva at an EMS tech outside a downtown sushi restaurant.
The Charleston Police Department charged Jonathan Gordon Darling of Mount Pleasant with throwing bodily fluids by a prisoner, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
On Tuesday night, officers responded to the Spring Roll Restaurant on 381 King St. in reference to a disorderly person. Police say when they arrived at the restaurant they saw Darling in a verbal altercation with the staff.
An incident report states that Darling then began screaming profanities and yelling,"You don't know who you're messing with!" at anyone passing by on the sidewalk.
When an officer asked Darling for his name, Darling said,"(Expletive) you! I'm a combat ranger. You can't do (expletive) for me!"
The officer said Darling had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and a strong smell of alcohol was coming from him.
Authorities say when the officer attempted to place handcuffs on Darling, the suspect pulled his arm away and turned his body in a fighting stance and dropped "his right foot back approximately 6 inches" and bent both knees.
The officer said he then put Darling against a wall and told him to stop resisting.
According to authorities, officers had to use their body weight to immobilize Darling on the ground and place him in handcuffs.
When EMS arrived to treat a cut to Darling's eyebrow, Darling told emergency officials,"(Expletive) you...I will (expletive) you up!"
Police say when EMS was transporting Darling to the hospital, Darling spit blood and saliva at a medical technician. Darling was released from Roper Hospital and locked up at the Charleston County Detention Center.
