Former Charlotte mayor, Pat McCrory, sworn in as NC Governor

RALEIGH, NC (WBTV) -

Pat McCrory was sworn in Saturday afternoon as Governor of North Carolina.

The ceremony which took place in the old House chambers, was administered by Chief Justice Sarah Parker.

McCrory is the first Republican governor since Jim Martin left office in 1993.

Outgoing Governor Beverly Perdue outgoing and incoming North Carolina Governor shared the stage as one handed off the official seal to the other before the oath of office was administered.

With his hand on two bibles and standing next to his wife Ann, Pat McCory became North Carolina's 74th governor.

The invitation only ceremony was short to the point and lasted just 13 minutes, but in first remarks as Governor, McCrory said he's in Raleigh for a reason.

"Our goal was not to get a title," he said." Our goal was to lead and to govern and to serve with a purpose."

The state's cabinet secretaries were also sworn in, and one the democrat in this republican administration is former Salisbury Mayor Susan Kluttz who will head up cultural resources.

Kluttz said, " I am flattered that this governor would ask me to be part of his administration. He's gonna be an outstanding governor and the fact that he said he would work in a bipartisan manner."

Those connected to his transition team like former state representative Ed MchMahan expects the governors honeymoon period to go smoothly.

"Both leaders of the house and senate today told me they couldn't be more pleased with the way things are starting out," he said.

In closing his first remarks as governor,the former Charlotte Mayor struck a chord of sincerity.

" I ask for your prayers. I Ask that you pray for Ann and myself, and may God continue to bless our great nation. May God continue to bless the state of North Carolina."

The official inauguration ceremonies will continue next weekend in Raleigh with the a speeches, parade, and ball.

The new governor will also hold an official open house at Charlotte's government center on Wednesday.
