"We were in bed asleep and all I heard was people knocking on the door saying 'fire! fire! fire!'" said Karl Babridge. "Right after that I heard a big boom and it was time to go."

Babridge and his girlfriend only had time to grab some personal belongings and get out when their building at Hunter's Way Apartments on Percival Rd caught fire Friday night.

"All I know is I'm coming out the door and all I see is smoke and flames," said Babridge.

Once he got out he realized his dog wasn't with him. So he went back in, fighting the smoke and flames.

"It was a panicked moment," he said. "Had to move fast. It was no telling how big it was."

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says nine units were damaged by the two-alarm fire but only six units were occupied.

"We had heavy fire and smoke coming through the roof," said Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins. "Right now we're unsure as to how the fire started."

"When we got back it was all gone," said Ah'breanna Rouse, who was not home when the fire broke out just after 5 p.m.

Rouse said it's hard to process what's happened but she's holding out hope that things will get better.

"It's sad to see you come home and got no place else to go," she said. "I mean, we lost a lot. Everything. He lost all his Christmas toys."

"Everything gone," said Rouse's younger brother, Aa'von Charles. "My PSP. My toys,  everything. I don't have a bed to sleep in, nothing."

The American Red Cross is helping the families who were displaced by the fire.

There were no injuries reported from the fire, but two people were taken to the hospital.  Firefighters say it's unclear if the injuries were a result of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $300,000. A cause has not been determined, but investigators say the fire started in one of the lower apartments.
