Local movement to honor victims of Sandy Hook school shooting

It's not an unusual sight to see a mother of two toddlers with an overflowing trunk.  Nor is it unusual to gather donations this close to Christmas.

But the reason it's happening is because of what we'd all hoped never would occur.  Last Friday, baby Sabrina was not the only one in tears.

"I cried probably all day," said Alexandra Rippy. "Woke up crying Saturday and then Saturday afternoon, just got that feeling.  I remember saying to my husband, 'We have to fly to Connecticut. We have to do something.'"

And so she did. It didn't involve a cross country flight. But as of three days ago, its involving people cross country.

Rippy started a Facebook page in honor of the kids who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

She and some Irmo and Lexington moms are gathering donations for 20 different charities in honor of each victim. And they are personalized.

"Didn't want to do anything random," she said.  "(I) wanted it to be something that child would want to participate with for example, Nerf, Jack Pinto was a huge NY Giants fan."

In honor of the twin who died, they are supplying a family with special needs twins a year's worth of diapers.

"This is a run, a 5K for Chase, he had just run a triathlon," she said.

Gifts are pouring in from all over the country including New York, Kentucky and Florida, after Rippy's Facebook page got popular just three days ago.

"Notifications of people who want to participate, send something," she said. "We had to open up my husband's work address to start getting in shipments."

So far, gifts are going to Oliver Gospel Mission, Epworth Children's home and more.

And she's not done. She's now searching for a horse charity in honor of a victim who loved to ride.

"Everyone is feeling," Rippy said. "Everyone is aching and because we're aching, we're putting all of that energy into something positive."
