COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Authorities say the man who was hit and killed on Interstate 20 Monday evening was waiting for assistance after running out of gas.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Michael M. Lindler, 19, of Columbia was struck by an Oldsmobile in the westbound lanes near mile marker 80 around 5:45 p.m.

Watts said Lindler and his girlfriend had pulled onto the shoulder after running out of gas near the Clemson Road exit. The coroner says it is unclear why Lindler was in the roadway.

Richland County EMS transported Lindler to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital where he later died.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday shows that he died from injuries sustained during the collision, Watts said.

The male driver and female passenger in the car were not hurt, according to troopers.

The South Carolina HighwayPatrol is investigating the incident.
