ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A man who stabbed a woman to death while she was babysitting four children under the age of two will spend the rest of his life in prison, according to

Cleophus Edwards, 24, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday after being found guilty of killing Carolyn Hanton, 44, in her Goff Avenue home in February, 2011.

Hanton was caring for four young children when Edwards broke into the home. Investigators said Edwards stabbed Hanton with a kitchen knife when she fought back. Some of the children, according to investigators, witnessed the brutal murder.

Edwards told deputies he did not know Hanton, and didn't think she was home. Previously, investigators believed Hanton knew her killer because there were no signs of forced entry. Investigators identified Edwards as the killer after recognizing the victim's computer at his home while serving a warrant for a probation violation.

Edwards lived less than a mile away from the crime scene.

Hanton was a member of the choir and a member of St. Paul's Baptist Church.
