Blazers "Redemption Season" ends in Florence

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The 2012 football season started with the Valdosta State football team looking for redemption.

The Blazers want it to end with their third Division II national championship.

VSU will play Winston Salem State for the NCAA DII title on Saturday in Florence, Alabama.

Playing for a national championship didn't seem probable after this year's team split their first four games.

It was a start that was familiar to the end of last season.

Valdosta State lost their final three games one year ago in the final minute.

But with their backs to the wall this season, the Blazers have reeled off nine straight wins and are looking for one more complete their season of redemption.

"Everybody just kind of wrote us off. That we were done last year and this year when we started out 2-2. We kind of took that personal. We kind of moved forward with it as a unit and as a whole. To kind of take care of the people who wrote us off and didn't give us a chance," said quarterback Cayden Cochran.

"It is a long road. Just to be here finally is like a sigh of relief but at the same time it really won't mean anything unless we win the championship," said defensive back Matt Pierce.

Valdosta State plays in the DII title game for a fourth time in ten years.

Kickoff against Winston-Salem State is 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Florence, Alabama.
