MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - One girl was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after she was run over by a float in the Christmas parade.

Lance Corporal Judd Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol office, said the girl fell off a float in the parade.  Witnesses tell WMBF News that is when the float ran over her legs and stomach.

"We have units stationed along the parade route as a precaution and were able to respond quickly," says Chief Norman Knight, with the Murrells Inlet and Garden City Fire Department.

Chief Knight says they had a quick response time and were able to treat the girl on scene before transporting her to Waccamaw Hospital. Jones said the girl was later airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina.

"Georgetown County Sheriff's Department was on scene, as well. They contacted the South Carolina Highway Patrol and they will be investigating the accident," explains Chief Knight.

After the accident, the girl was alert, but scared.

The identity of the girl and the extent of her injuries are unknown at this time. However, Chief Knight says he has no information that would lead him to believe her injuries are life threatening.

"It is my understanding the girl's mother was there with her, and her dad was along the parade route. I believe they both went to the hospital with her," says Chief Knight.

The parade route was closed for 20 to 25 minutes while units were on scene.
