COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - Kevin Herbst rushed for 132 yards and 2 TD's to help Bishop England (13-1) win its second straight AA Division 2 state title with a 21-0 shutout of Abbeville (last year's A Division 1 state champ) at Johnson Stadium in Columbia on Friday night.
The Battling Bishops used some trickery for the first touchdown of the game as Herbst pitched the ball to Nick Theos, who tossed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jamie Garrett. That give Bishop England the 7-0 lead.
That's the way it stayed until the fourth quarter, when Herbst ran for touchdowns from 2 and 29 yards away to seal the win.
The Bishops defense also had an impressive night pitching a shutout in the state title game for the 2nd year in a row. Zach Richter led the way with 13 tackles, including 2 for a loss. Harrison Boals and Griffie Loy each added sacks for the BE defense.
Bishop England becomes the first Lowcountry SCHSL team to win back-to-back state title since Summerville did it 1983 and 1984.
