COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is crediting an alert resident for helping to catch a suspected burglar.

Deputies arrested Mark Broom, 29, on Tuesday and charged him with two counts of burglary and larceny.

Investigators say Broom on Monday broke into an apartment at the Hunt Club Apartments located at 7602 Hunt Club Rd. and stole a 32" television and two jars of pennies.

A concerned citizen identified Broom as the burglar and deputies began the process of securing arrest warrants for him, but their efforts were interrupted when Broom tried to hit another apartment the next day, Lott said.

Around 12:30 p.m., a resident heard noises coming from another apartment and saw Broom using a tool in an effort to get in through the front door, investigators said. When that didn't work, Broom went back to his vehicle to get another tool, according to Lott.

When Broom returned, the concerned citizen detained Broom until deputies arrived and arrested him.

Broom was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
