$1M Powerball winner: ‘I’m not quitting, but I’m not working anymore overtime’

ROCK HILL, SC (WIS) - Jerry Hucks of Rock Hill got off work early this morning and was warming up his truck before heading home when he remembered the sticky note where he jotted down last night's winning Powerball numbers.

He reached down into the side compartment of his truck to find his Powerball ticket. He flipped on the light inside the cab to see the first five numbers on the sticky note aligned perfectly with the last set of numbers printed on his ticket.

Hucks, a truck builder for Diamler Trucks in Cleveland, NC, went back inside the plant and a coworker looked the Powerball ticket over and told him he won $1 million.

"I didn't even have the truck door locked, and I had a $1 million ticket out there," he told lottery officials when he arrived today to collect his winnings.  "Then I can't believe I let three or four guys at work hold my ticket and Google the numbers screaming, 'It's a $1 million.'"

His parting words to them: "I'm not quitting, but I'm not working anymore overtime."

He called his girlfriend to tell her the news and that he was headed home. She was worried it was taking him so long, but at one point he had to pull over to throw up, overcome he beat the 1 in 5,153,633 odds to be a millionaire.

Hucks was one of three South Carolina Education Lottery players to successfully match the first five numbers drawn Wednesday night (5, 16, 22, 23 and 29  PB: 6).  He stopped at the MR Express on his way into work yesterday and had to stand in line to get a ticket.  He's glad he was patient and waited for his quick pick to print.

Had he matched one more number, the red Powerball®, a share of the record-setting $587.5 million jackpot would have been his. He's hardly disappointed.

He's paying off his house and will be back at work tomorrow.

Had the winner paid the extra $1 for PowerPlay®, his $1 million prize would have been $2 million.

MR Express in Rock Hill received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
