Poll worker quits over lack of leadership from county election board

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A Richland County polling place could be short a volunteer for the next election.

One poll worker said he's quitting unless leadership at the top changes.

"I was just baffled on election day when I saw what we were dealing with and saw what the other precincts were dealing with," said Michael Sullivan. "It's mind boggling.

He's talking about the excessive waits so many voters endured on Election Day.

Sullivan contacted WIS after seeing another poll worker Tuesday say she knew ahead of time there were too few machines, even though the elections director says she did not know.

"When I saw the WIS report, I was really surprised to see the part where Lillian McBride testified she had no prior knowledge about a shortage of voting machines," said Sullivan. "I was surprised because that conflicted with my experience as one of the precinct clerks."

Sullivan says he got word from a representative at Richland County elections back in September.

"I was told at that time that Ward 11 was going to get 3 machines on election day," said Sullivan. "It's half the number we had for the 2008 presidential election."

So on September 27th, he sent this email to his contact at the elections office:

"Did I understand correctly that we are getting just 3 for this November? It would seem we might run into very long lines with even fewer machines for this election. Perhaps I misunderstood? - Mike "

Sullivan said he never got a response to his e-mail.

"It was completely avoidable," said Sullivan. "If we would've been given the number of machines we had for the city primary in April, we would have been able to clear up the lines by middle of the afternoon which is exactly what we did four years ago."
