Giving Tuesday: Getting people in the holiday spirit by thinking of others

Posted: Updated:

After the madness of Black Friday comes Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for people to get into the holiday spirit by giving back.

Its volunteer work Claire Gostomski doesn't mind--seeing to the homeless animals at Pets, Inc. in Columbia.

"I love dogs, I want to be a vet, and I want to give back because on Black Friday, everybody kind of thinks about themselves," said Claire.

But not on Giving Tuesday, which is an online initiative to get people into the holiday spirit by thinking of others.

Carlos Terry came out, too.

"I feel like it gives people an opportunity to realize what's really important," said Carlos. "And that it's not all about consumerism."

Charlene Richardson didn't know about Giving Tuesday, but likes the idea.

"I think it's a brilliant idea," said Charlene. "I tell people to shop locally as well. Don't just think about yourself."

If you can't or don't want to give blood the Red Cross has put together a holiday catalog at Instead of a cash donation you can order specific items in honor of friends or family.

"You can donate ten dollars for a symbolic gift, like a hot meal in a shelter," said AnnaKate Twitty with American Red Cross. "Once you make that donation, we'll send you a card you can then give to your loved one in lieu of a gift."

Claire hopes Giving Tuesday will inspire people beyond 24 hours.

"Not a lot of people do charitable work," said Claire. "So I think it would be very helpful."
