COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is missing a deadline set by some states for notifying residents when their personal data has been stolen. Still, experts note state notification laws provide plenty of leeway.
Gov. Nikki Haley says the state will notify the 3.8 million individual tax filers whose data was stolen. Her spokesman said Friday letters and emails should go out within two weeks.
Revenue officials estimate 1.3 million of those filers live outside South Carolina.
All but a few states require residents be notified. Like South Carolina, most give a non-specific timeline, such as without delay. But a handful of states require notice no later than 45 days after a breach is discovered.
The 45th day is Saturday.
Haley's office says it had to wait to learn precisely whose data was taken.
