Husband charged with murder after boaters find body in Broad River

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office has charged a man with murder after investigators say his wife's body was found in the Broad River early Friday afternoon.

Sheriff Lee Foster said deputies arrested 42-year-old Allen Lee Koon of Prosperity after the body was identified as his wife, Cindy.

Koon's body was found by a group of boaters near Highway 213 at about 12:30 Friday afternoon.

Investigators say she had been beaten, stabbed and cut. They were able to identify Koon through her fingerprints.  Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said Koon died from a cut to her jugular vein.

Just as investigators identified Koon at about 6 p.m. Friday, her husband, Allen, reported her missing to the Sheriff's Office.

Investigators went to the Koon's home on St. Luke's Church Road with a search warrant.  Based on evidence they found there and questioning Koon, he was arrested.

Sheriff Foster says the couple had a history of domestic problems dating back to 2007. Records show deputies had been called to the Koon home approximately 25 times since 2008.

Investigators say there is no evidence that anyone other than Koon was involved in his wife's death.

A bond hearing has not been set.

    The puppy was spotted under a leaking tar storage container on the public property. According to the animal rescue group that posted about the situation on Facebook, it cried out for help, unable to move as one side of his body and his face were stuck in the substance.
