HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The holiday shopping season is officially in full swing with Black Friday sales in nearly every store, but as you go from shop to shop there are also some scams you need to look out for.

"It's almost Christmas. People really hope and pray for a $1,000 gift card. That would be great," imagines scam victim Patricia Bradley.

A text message Bradley received stating she had won the $1,000 gift turned out to be a scam.

The California native says she almost fell victim to the scam when she received the text saying she was the winner of a recent contest and was getting a cool grand in the form of a Target gift card.

The text encouraged her to log onto a website, but Bradley says she knew better.

"That's where so many people get their personal information compromised," reasoned Bradley.

Target says it only sends customers coupons to their phones, not messages claiming they have won a gift card.

If you do get a text message, you should contact Target's or any other company's guest relations to report the potential scam.
