Columbia stores begin Black Friday a little earlier

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Last night, shoppers filed in to Target on Garners Ferry Road for deep discounts, but this morning proved to be a different story.

Parking lots at the major big box stores weren't nearly as full and neither was consumer excitement.

"I think going out last night would have been a little intense for us, but we still might be able to get a few things for family and friends," said shopper Brenna Cawthorn.

But there were plenty of people on the hunt for big ticket items like flat screen televisions and Apple products still top the list for many.

According the American Retail Federation, 147 million Americans will shop this holiday weekend, and they are estimating they will spend about $400 each. However, not everyone we ran into is planning on spending that type of money

"I found The Hunger Games," said Kayla Bedenbaugh. "It's normally $24, but I got it for $8."

This weekend accounts for about 30 percent of holiday sales for stores, and many opened earlier than ever before to lure customers, which we found out not everyone was happy about.

"I think it's takes away from the Thanksgiving tradition," said Diane Reynolds. "We had a lot of family stuff going on. We didn't want to get in all that."
