There she is: Miss Charleston, Ann Ashley Wood, named Miss South Carolina

(Spartanburg-AP) July 12, 2004 - Miss Charleston Ann Ashley Wood has been crowned Miss South Carolina for 2004.

Wood also won a $20,000 scholarship in Saturday night's Miss South Carolina pageant. at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. She will go on to the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 18th.

The 22-year-old Duke University graduate's talent was a lyrical dance to Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up."

Wood says she's ready to travel the state speaking about her platform, character development. Her business, American Protocol Institute, teaches leadership skills to high school students so they will be prepared for college.

On Sunday Wood received gifts such as makeovers and public speaking lessons to help her prepare for the Miss America pageant in September. She says she expects to have no problems with the active schedule in the next few months.

She received her crown from Miss South Carolina 2003 Jessica Eddins. Eddins was Miss North Charleston.

First-runner up was Miss North Charleston Potitsa Niki Chavis. Miss Golden Corner Carmen Band was second runner-up. Miss Lancaster Erin Colgan was third runner-up and Miss Easley LaJoia Broughton was the fourth runner-up.

Wood also won the swimsuit competition in Thursday night's preliminary competition.

Miss Charleston-Southern University, Angela Michelle Walker, won the talent competition Thursday. Previous preliminary talent winners were Miss Greater Irmo Katie Morton and Miss Spartanburg Kelly Taylor Wilson. Previous preliminary swimsuit winners were Miss Golden Corner Carmen Band and Miss Cherokee County Hailey Brooke Peay.
