SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

Police are hoping community assistance will help them identify and question a man who stopped at the scene immediately after a 70-year-old woman was hit and killed by a car in the early morning hours of October 25 near Tuomey Hospital.

Investigators released two fuzzy surveillance photos Thursday in hopes somebody would recognize the white male or the blue long bed crew cab pick-up truck he was driving. Police believe he may have witnessed the incident and may have valuable information in the case.

Jeanette Harrison was struck by a dark colored newer model mid-sized automobile at approximately 7:30 a.m. The collision occurred while Harrison was attempting to cross Calhoun Street walking toward the Day Surgery entrance to Tuomey Hospital. The vehicle, which likely has damage to its front and side, did not stop.

Police are also hoping a recently-released sketch of the woman they suspect was driving the car that hit Harrison will help them give the victim's family some answers. Investigators say the driver is believed to be a white female between the ages of 20-30 years old.

Investigators are also looking for a small, white car, possibly a Ford Mustang, that was last seen heading east on Calhoun Street. Investigators think the people in the vehicle may have information in the case.

"We just don't know how fast the car was going or anything like that at this moment, but we're continuing our investigation and we will try to make those determinations as we go along," said Sumter Police Staff Sgt. Anthony Williams.

During that time of day, Rivers says there is a lot of pedestrian traffic on Calhoun Street with people coming and going from the hospital

Police believe that the driver frequently commuted in that area. If you know anything that can help, you are urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
