McCulloch concedes House 75 to Finlay

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

After a week delay in the counting of votes, unofficial results from the Richland County Election Commission say Kirkman Finlay has won House District 75.

Finlay, the former Columbia City Councilman and ex-mayoral candidate, will take over for retiring House member Jim Harrison.

While the results have not been certified, the results say Finlay beat former prosecutor and University of South Carolina legal counsel Joe McCulloch 51% to 48%.

In a statement, McCulloch called running for office for the first time a "profound and meaningful experience", but quickly moved to offer his congratulations to Finlay.

"I congratulate Mr. Finlay on his victory and wish him success in representing the people and interests of House District 75. He has my full cooperation and support," said the statement. "As for me, I will continue to serve this community and do what I can to make South Carolina a better place to live."

Democrats wanted a recount of the House District 75 race due to a cascade of Election Day problems including, lines of voters, too few voting machines, and broken counting scanners.

However, the Democrats pulled back on their demands earlier this week and the state Supreme Court allowed the County Election Commission to continue counting the votes after a flurry of legal activity.

Richland County still has to certify these results.
