COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - West Columbia Sen. Nikki Setzler has been named to lead Democrats in the South Carolina Senate.
The State newspaper reported that the 67-year-old Setzler was chosen by his colleagues Monday as minority leader.
Setzler replaces Sen. John Land of Manning, who did not seek re-election.
Setzler has been in the Senate since 1977.
Democrats will hold just 18 seats when lawmakers return to the Statehouse in January. That's down one from the last session. Republican Greg Hembree won the seat that North Myrtle Beach Sen. Dick Elliott gave up.
Republican Gov. Nikki Haley and her allies spent thousands of dollars to try to defeat Setzler's re-election bid. But Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey now says the governor looks forward to working with him in the next session.
