Organizers: Carrier Classic will return to Yorktown in 2013

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

The Carrier Classic will return to the USS Yorktown to open the college basketball season despite last weekend's canceled contest between Ohio State and Marquette, according to organizers.

Morale Entertainment President Mike Whalen said Monday his group and the Patriots Point Development Authority are seriously talking about holding the event again next year.

This year's men's contest on Friday night between the fourth-ranked Buckeyes and the Golden Eagles was called off when condensation on the court made it too dangerous for the players.

"We were very disappointed," said Whalen at a press conference at Patriots Point Monday. "It was my decision that it was unsafe and we had to make it a no contest."

Mac Burdette, executive director at Patriots Point, and Whalen are not only in contract negotiations for a multi-year agreement that would bring the classic back to the Yorktown, but they also have a secret solution to the condensation issue.

"We have 100% confidence that this solution will work," said Whalen. "It's actually a pretty simple solution but I'm not going to go into it."

The President of Morale Entertainment is being cautious and not spreading the solution because now the Carrier Classic is competing with other Carrier games held around the country.

"You think big and sometimes some risks go with it," said Mac Burdette. "We're ready to go and we're ready to start talking about this again."

4,400 people attended the Carrier Classic this past weekend. 90 percent of the tickets were donated to active duty and veterans of our armed forces.

Even though the event had a great turnout, the 3rd annual Carrier Classic still isn't a slam dunk.

Burdette will have to first run the idea of the Classic by the Yorktown board of trustees. That meeting is scheduled two months from now.

When the groups meet, Burdette will also be pitching the possibility of making the Classic an entire weekend event including concerts and family friendly attractions.

"We're excited to be partnering with Patriots Point," said Whalen. "We're in contract negotiations right now and we've had a great time here in Charleston and we'll be back."

Before the Men's game between Ohio State and Marquette was canceled, Whalen said 13 teams showed interest in being apart of the event in 2013. After the condensation called off the event Whalen said he got two more calls from college basketball programs.

The President of Morale Entertainment says six of the 15 teams interested are currently in the AP Preseason Top 25.
