LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A former NFL player from the midlands has been arrested and charged with domestic violence after investigators say he beat his girlfriend unconscious.

Ventrell Jenkins was arrested just after midnight Wednesday by Lexington County Sheriff's Deputies.

Investigators say when deputies arrived at the couple's home, they heard the woman yelling for help and saw Jenkins was punching her in the face.

"They tussled and he took the Taser away from the officer, and the officer backed up and by that time another officer had arrived on the scene," said Lexington County Sheriff James Metts.

As the attack was going on, deputies say a dog inside the home went after them. Deputies say they used pepper spray and a Taser to stop the dog's attack.

"He went over and picked up a picture of the young lady he had just severely beaten and was saying, 'I love you. I love you. I love you,'" said Metts.

After subduing Jenkins and the dog, deputies found the girlfriend unconscious and severely beaten. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Jenkins is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and resisting arrest. He was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center.

"We really don't know what happened to cause him to become this violent, but apparently maybe he was dreaming," said Metts. "We just don't know at this point in time."

Two deputies were taken to the hospital to be treated for dog bites.

Jenkins is a former standout at Columbia High School who plays for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.  He formerly played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills.

Jenkins is held on $110,000 bail.
