KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Drivers on Interstate 20 were no doubt rubbernecking Saturday afternoon when they came upon a tractor trailer that caught fire.

Lugoff firefighters were called to US 601 at the Pilot Truck Stop next to Interstate 20 at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday.  Despite the explosion from the high-pressure tires that destroyed the cab of the truck, firefighters managed to save the entire shipment in the trailer.

Lisa Stroud of Lexington sent photos of the fire to WIS.

The driver of the tractor made it out safely.

Lugoff Fire Chief Dennis Ray said the truck was carrying a shipment from New Mexico to the Target Distribution Center in Lugoff when the driver noticed smoke coming from the engine.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One lane of northbound US 601 was closed while crews cleaned up the debris and spilled diesel fuel.
