COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A suspect is in the hospital after Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott says the man reached for an officer's gun.

The officer was called out to a domestic dispute around 12:00 a.m. on Allen Benedict Court.

Scott said when the officer arrived, he tried to stop the male suspect, Anthony Walker, from violently assaulting a female victim.

That's when Walker, according to the chief, reached for the officer's gun and the officer shot him.

The suspect was taken to Palmetto Health Richland his condition is unknown.
