FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

The Winnsboro Public Safety Officer wanted for the attempted murder of his wife has been captured in Fairfield County after shooting himself in the chest.

Michael Roseboro was taken into custody at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday near Camp Welfare Rd. and Arrowhead Rd. near Great Falls.  SLED spokesperson Thom Berry said Roseboro shot himself in the chest while talking to Fairfield County Chief Deputy Keith Lewis.

"He has been found," said Berry.  "We wish he certainly had not shot himself however he is going to be treated for his injuries and as he recovers he's going to be charged. "

He was taken to Palmetto Health Richland by ambulance and Berry said Roseboro's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Berry said Roseboro did not point the handgun at officers.

"At no time did Mr. Roseboro point is weapon at any including the chief deputy," said Berry. "It appears he took the gun and shot himself in the upper chest."

Deputies say Roseboro was seen in his sister's home earlier Thursday a few miles away. The sister called 911 and told investigators that it looked like he had been in the woods for days.

Deputies used a SLED helicopter and bloodhounds to search the area Thursday afternoon.

Roseboro has been on the run since Sunday. Deputies say he shot his wife while on duty, and then fled the scene in a white Ford Crown Victoria.

Roseboro's wife is in stable condition in the hospital.

Roseboro was captured near an area known as Camp Welfare, which is used as a church camp. Berry said it appeared Roseboro had been living there for several days.
