FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say Hurricane Sandy eroded between 3 to 5 feet of the Folly Beach shoreline.

That could increase the cost of a federal renourishment project. That price tag is currently estimated at $20 million.

Meanwhile, it could be days before people in much of the northeast see their lives return to normal, in the aftermath of the storm that has left at least 48 people dead.

Lower Manhattan was one of the hardest hit areas. The storm sent a 14 foot surge of seawater into low lying streets. The full extent of damage in New Jersey is not yet known.

First responders are trying to rescue hundreds stranded by floodwaters.
