Harvest Hope prepares food for Sandy victims

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

About one thousand pounds of food is ready to go help the victims of Hurricane Sandy from the Harvest Hope Food Bank when the call comes.

"Whether it is a natural disaster or a man-made disaster, hunger at anytime is a disaster," said Harvest Hope CEO Denise Holland.

The organization "Feeding America" provides the network needed to make mutual aid like this possible, and it doesn't come at the cost of feeding people here in the state. There's a system in place to make sure there is enough to go around.

"We collect these pop top cans and we cycle them through our inventory. So we started this years ago, and when we get to a certain supply and gets to a certain date, we put it back into our regular inventory and we replenish it, so it's a cyclical thing so that we always have a certain amount ready to go," said Chris Daly, a worker at the food bank.

When you combine Sandy and the holidays being just around the corner, the demand is about to reach an all-time high.

"It is our human nature to want to do something," said Holland. "We can't just watch it and have no response."

Doing something could mean dropping off a few cans.
