IRMO, SC (WIS) -
Kevin Cullis' man cave just got a lady's touch.
He found his new, hungry houseguest in Fairfield County near the intersection of a Glenn's Bridge Road and Estes Lane.
"When we first pulled up I thought she'd been hit by a car because she was bloody and was licking wounds," said Cullis.
Ginger, as she's now known, was a bait dog.
"She could barely stand up," he said. "We had to hold underneath her abdomen to help her walk to the car."
"I just couldn't see leaving her on the side of the road," he said.
So Cullis took her to an emergency vet, then to an animal rescue. But he said he was turned away because Ginger is a pit bull mix. She's a tough breed to have adopted.
So Cullis went into his own pocket, spending almost $1,000 to get Ginger stabilized.
"We don't really know what she's going to need at this point because her wounds are still pretty bad and open," he said. "I don't want someone to do it for free. I don't want to cost them too much, but if we can find somebody to help us out and do it at cost that would help take some of the burden off of us."
"She was swollen, had scars all over, had chain marks on her neck," said Katherine Searle at Palmetto Animal Health.
Searle volunteered to get Ginger back on her feet at cost.
"It's really hard when you have somebody who's trying to do the right thing and rescue a dog, but then to have to pay for everything out of pocket so we're doing things at cost, donating my time so we can fix her together," she said.
While Searle supplies the care, Cullis will lend his cave to a dog who found a couple of angels after escaping hell.
