COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

An early-morning fire forced nine people out of their homes Wednesday.

Firefighters from the Irmo Fire District were called to the Stoney Creek Apartments on Berryhill Rd. in Columbia just after 5 a.m.

Everyone got out safely, but firefighters say six apartments were destroyed.  The American Red Cross is helping the eight adults and one child who were displaced by the fire. Managers of the apartment complex tell WIS News 10 that they were able to relocate the victims to vacant apartments.

Investigators believe the fire started on the porch of an apartment and spread quickly.  The cause remains under investigation.

There are no reports of injuries.
