COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -
Columbia Police are investigating after an elderly man was hit and killed by a truck on the campus of the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center.
According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, the accident happened around 9:50 a.m. Duane Mack, 85, of Gilbert and a relative were leaving the hospital on the sidewalk when another elderly man in a pickup truck was attempting to park in a handicap space.
The truck, for unknown reasons, went over the curb and hit Mack. He was rushed to the hospital where he died about an hour later.
The vehicle came to rest at the side of one of the buildings on campus.
The driver of the truck and his passenger were being checked out by Dorn VA staff.
Police do not believe the accident was intentional. It is not known if any charges have been filed.
