Would you be willing to pay an additional penny in sales tax?

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It may be just 15 days until the Presidential Election, but Richland County voters also have an important decision to make: whether or not to vote yes or no to the penny sales tax initiative.

The Community Relations Council held a discussion Monday night at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to help voters understand the issue.

It was one of the last chances for voters to hear both sides.

Chuck Hill, a young pastor, listened in the audience. He's against the tax that's expected to generate roughly $50 million a year over the next 20 years. He doesn't believe the money will be used honestly.

"I don't see that trust," said Hill. "I really like what the opposition said. Why not do it for a seven year capitol project? I think that's great. I would vote on that any day because it gives them a chance to prioritize projects and show us how they're going to spend the money like they said."

Advocates tried to sell the tax as the best option to save the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority.

Sixty-three percent of the money would improve county roads and infrastructure, which they say would bring businesses and jobs. Twenty-nine percent would revamp the bus system with a complete bus overhaul with better technology and accessibility. The remaining percent would build bike trails and walkways.

Anne Morris is retired and doesn't ride the bus, but she is concerned about those who do.

"It is a total necessity, and I don't want somebody to not be able to get to work," said Morris.

Rachel Gunter left the discussion still undecided.

"I think I need more information," Gunter said.
