CLEMSON, SC (AP) -
Clemson University trustees have given preliminary approval to a $98 million building plan that would alter the appearance of the central campus.
The Independent Mail of Anderson reports that the finance and facilities committee voted unanimously Thursday to let school administrators hire an architecture and engineering firm to study current buildings and set cost estimates for replacing them. Clemson vice president for finance Brett Dalton said the design phase will cost $1.74 million.
Final approval of the design phase is scheduled for Friday's full board meeting. The board will also have to vote again before a construction contract is awarded.
Plans call for a 179,000-square-foot dormitory, a 76,000-square-foot dining hall, including a meal-plan area, convenience store and retail restaurant. The plans also include 5,000 square feet of meeting space.
