Experience in Political or Related Positions: Miss Debbie Bowen has been a Sumter resident for more than 35 years. She has held numerous jobs from bookkeeper to department store manager to customer service manager. The job that has gained her the most notoriety and the nickname "Miss Debbie" in Sumter is co-founder and co-owner of Miss Libby's School of Dance and Gymnastics.
Miss Debbie was the owner there for 20 years before selling in order to pursue other career arenas. She then got her real estate license and started practicing real estate in 2005. She became the broker-in-charge of ERA Wilder Realty Inc. in 2007 and decided to let someone else "grab the reigns" in order to pursue the mayor position in Sumter.
Miss Debbie is still selling real estate and will continue to do so if elected.
Miss Debbie is the chairwoman of the Board of Sumter Education Foundation, a member on the Board of Directors and an ambassador for Sumter Chamber of Commerce, where she is very active. She is also on the Board of Directors for Toumey Foundation and the honorary commander for the Army 4th BCD. She is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army Boys' and Girls' Club and is a JWLN award recipient and also sits on the board for the YMCA.
Miss Debbie was named Merchant of the Year in 1996 by the Sumter Chamber of Commerce. She is an active Rotarian, where the motto is "service above self." She is also a past recipient of the Army Molly Pitcher Award for service. She is a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. She has two children and is a proud grandmother of three.
