COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The flu is here -- that's the word from the Department of Health and Environmental Control as the seasonal virus has finally arrived in South Carolina.

DHEC says their laboratory has confirmed three cases in the first official week of the flu season.

The department recommends people from the age of six months and older to get the flu shot as the best way to avoid getting the illness.

Influenza is a naturally occurring viral disease that causes respiratory infections. Symptoms may include:

  • A sudden onset of fever
  • Dry cough
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal congestion or stuffiness

You can get a flu shot through DHEC or many doctors, pharmacies, and clinics throughout the Midlands. If you're looking for a spot to get a flu shot, please visit DHEC's website.
