ANDERSON, SC (WYFF) -

Anderson police say a deputy who was working extra duty at a bar had part of his finger bitten off by a man during an altercation.

According to a report, the deputy approached Brian Ashley Gilbert after several waitresses told him that Gilbert was touching them inappropriately.

The deputy told Gilbert he was an Anderson County sheriff's deputy and instructed him to pay his bill and leave.

The deputy said that is when Gilbert and several others in the bar started an argument.

Gilbert and several other people went outside, the deputy said.

The deputy said he followed, and when he got outside Gilbert, charged him.

The deputy said he tried to dodge Gilbert, but Gilbert bit his pink finger causing permanent disfigurement, according to the incident report.

According to the incident report, several people tried to restrain Gilbert until more officers arrived.

The deputy and Gilbert were taken to AnMed Health.

Police said Gilbert was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech and had a strong odor of alcohol on him.

Gilbert was charged with assault and battery and public disorderly conduct.
