Highway 378 back open after hazardous chemical spill

Posted: Updated:

Highway 378 in Sumter County is back open in both directions near the entrance to Shaw Air Force Base after a hazardous chemical spill.

Capt. Brian Horton with the Sumter County Fire Department says a trailer was on its side near the intersection of Highway 378 and Highway 441 and leaking a chlorine-like substance. He says they have contained the leak, and there is no danger to the public.

The highway was closed in both directions to Eagle Road for several hours while crews were cleaning up and off-loading the remaining chemicals.

There are no injuries reported in the incident, according to Horton.
