Group holds 5K run to honor late USC president

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former University of South Carolina president Andrew Sorensen was known for his bow ties, and that neck wear is the inspiration for a 5K race in his honor.

The Dr. Andrew Sorensen Memorial 5K Bow Tie Run/Walk was Saturday in Columbia and benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters.

It's the second year for the race.

Sorensen died in 2011 at age 72. He was the university's 27th president and served from 2002 until 2008 and was a professor at the university's medical school before leaving to take a post as chief fundraiser at Ohio State University.

He also served as president of the University of Alabama, provost at the University of Florida and executive director of the AIDS Institute at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
