COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The man arrested by law enforcement officials in connection with the brutal murder of a Midlands couple in St. Maarten has been identified.

Meyshane Johnson of Jamaica will be formally arraigned on Tuesday on murder charges in connection to the stabbing deaths of Michael and Thelma King.

According to the St. Maarten News Network, investigators have determined Johnson borrowed a friend's car when he robbed and killed the couple in their island condominium.

Investigators say they also fired at that car when Johnson escaped from a previous robbery at a business.

The paper reports the friend of Johnson called police when he found a bullet hole and other items in the car that investigators say belonged to the Kings.

"But this, this sticks to your brain because it's a couple that comes here, is genuinely liked, and they end up this way and that's the outcry in our society," said Taco Stein, solicitor general of St. Maarten. "People are really abhorred by it."

The newspaper also reported Monday police believe Johnson may be responsible for other crimes on the island.
